You check your weopanry - secure the big UV lamps an pat the pouches containing various explosives.. A final buckling up of armour plates vest leggings or throat guards then you quietly advance into the tunnelling.
Along the first thirty metres or so there are occasional lighter patches where a flamer has struck - kinda man-sized lumps which have been hosed down by napalm jets - there are sticky patches wher the bodies must have been hauled away leaving the negative shadow. A reminder of what you are here for.
Meg takes a position in the centre of the team occasionally concentrating hard.. The mages can see that she has a heavy active detect spell up - you would guess it is up towards the limit of practical casting (F12 is regarded as the upper limit - anything higher tends to be far too difficult to cast successfully)
Chuck and Micro have been called back to the main site so there are a couple of new faces with Meg -
Before we go any further it would be bad form to not introduce people - the new guys have been brought up to scratch with the current team general capabilities - you now need to know what these guys can do
I'm picking up quite a lot of active magics and it is hard to nail down the direction and distance - this takes some getting used to so we will have to progress slowly untill I can scan section by section.. I'm going to try to use it like a radar sweep and use a really narrow beam rather than trying to interperate every signal that is in range...
something up front.. cant judge the distance yet as I have little to compare to ...
the front three very quietly - as quiet as they can - advance fifteen.. twenty metres - as you ease around the bend your IR picks up the heat shillouette with ease and a silenced short burst rips into the ghoul..
the ghoul is scrawny naked and caked with filth. No doubt that it carries a variety of diseases as well as the retro virus. the skin is leathery with the facial features drawn tight exposing the chipped fangs in a permanent grimmace - gnawing on some delightful titbit.
the silenced burst blows a hole in its chest throwing it to the wall where it slumps..
It judders ferociously for ten to fifteen seconds - slashing the air like an automaton as though it has been wound up and the spring has broken all of the energy released at once... - then with a few final twitches it stops

*ooc: dumb question... but is this both the surface and sewer groups?*
Hunter scratches his chin a little withthe back of his hand. "Quick refresher there shade.. you said.. no cure for the virus?"

((ummm, what happened to my watchers?)) Shade stared at the downed ghoul, enjoying the sight maybe a little too much. He smiled but was deadpan with his reply, clearly wrapped up in the sight of the ghoul. " None to my knowledge and I do my best to keep up with these things." He spoke to the body in a singy-songy kinda crazy voice." Say goodnight Gracie." and laughed about it. ((Shade should be able to ID Megs spell. It's why I took that kn. skill. )) httphttphttphttp

The watchers will be moving around but will not be as reliable as a spell or skill which you are using. they are OK as backup and probably best as point defence warning rather than as 'scouts' Watchers could easily alert a ghoul, as well you know - You are not sure of how tasty ghouls regard watchers. Will they take the time and trouble to chase them - or will they just ignore them?
You prod the ghoull corpse to make sure it is no longer active.. noting the tough leathery skin is scarred deeply with masses of cuts scratches and gouges.. it looks like it must wrestle devil rats 24/7.. although the majotity of the scarring looks to come from three clawed cuts - the evidence seems to point to it ripping at itself... Rolling the body over - there are far less scars on its back
The eyes are partially-lidded so it would seem to take a small effort to blink rather than a natural reflex.. 24 hour awareness? the pupils are milky white - blind. However you know that these 'see' into the astral so will pick up any life and spirit sources with ease.
Use mechanical drones to hunt them..? Yes but what rigger in his right mind would hunt ghouls when he could be earning a much easier yen?
The life force has gone - the creature is dead. This is most unusual - it is like a delayed reaction - you shoot it, then a few seconds later after it stops thrashing the detect spell registers that it is dead. I would have expected that the shot would kill it and immediatly remove the magical component of its nature..
Meg bends over the dead creature taking out a plas stick she swabs off the blood then bags it. It is almost an academic exercise... Bishop snorts while keeping an eye further up..
Yes yes I'm coming - here give me a minute and I should be able to get used to this detect.. it is hard to focuss in on what is there because the earth blanks out a lot
Blackout finds the readings off the Ultrasound scanner are scrambled too - the things are fine for a nice wide open space - there is a good reading out to about 20 metres after that there is too much interference unless you are sighting down a straight..
There is a feeling that armed with a bundle of useful gizmos and a bevvy of magics this creeping around underground is tougher than you expected - all of your readings are shorter or more vague than expected.. could be you just need more deep down time
The Spell is a Detect Magic F10 - Shade is able to work out the force which would normally register as 'very high - above your ability to quickly astrally analyse'
Once infected there is no known way to reverse the virus effect. There has been a lot of research on reversing the meta-changes and some clinics promis a return to 'normal' human DNA structure - with provisos. (you wonder where all of the willing test subjects came from)
On the brighter side you are not sure of the incubation time - hours or even days have been suggested rather than minutes. It would seem to suggest that as long as you take very fast action and get a transfusion to purge any wiggies then you ought to fight it off. You could tap into someone's research banks and datasnatch the intel...
You are now a single team - any characters taking a break have been recalled to the main industrial unit and you should (may?) have some further support from new ones..

Make sure that you note what gear you have got which is active - so far you have been very quiet - downing the ghoul with a silencet burst. Ultrasound, non-silenced guns, U-V lamps or standard white light? - what have you got turned on that could be detected by a ghoul further along the route?
How far along will any watchers go or is anyone nipping off in the astral? what spells have you got up?
Why is he being so picky.. could there be something nastier up ahead?
There are a couple of side tubes higher up the walls.. generally you would want to follow the 'main drag' which is indicated by the crete skin having been scratched off the walls by ghoul claws to expose the natural earth/rock. Where the tunnelling has not been exposed you have a good look along or down the pipin/conduit run and recon that a ghoul would be blind in there so it would stand to reason that they would not be a favourite haunt of a ghoul. It might chase a few rats along but would exit pretty qiickly.
Squeaking of rats and vermin... there dont seem to be a lot. Munched out?
you follow the main tunnelling to a junction which has been scratched off in both directions.. off to the one side Meg picks up three no four dual-natureds and to the other there are two. roughly thirty metres away and of course the pesky tunnel twists just enough to keep them all out of sight... darn engineers why cant they build straight.

Meg shoulders the big UV lamp on its strap over one shoulder then labels and puts the sample into a satchel at her side. She has a short leatherlook coat to her knees not as long as a duster nor as heavy. she carries a big medkit on her back and there are a few carry paks along with a heavy wrecking bar around the belt at her waist.
theres a shoulder cam wired to one of the paks at her waist - you all have face hoods available so if you dont want to be identified on camera then you can object to it being brought along - or cover yourselves. it matches the full body urban camo suits you also have access to - if you wish
No pistol no blade.. but she does wear a fancy gold snake design wrapped from hand to elbow which the mages will certainly notice as being about half a million's worth of weapon focus (F4 focus if you rudely peer closely) You will have seen it before but she dosnt wear it except for special occasions.
She has a couple of minor spells kicked on - physical boosts most likley to improve reflexes. From what you remember of the vampire who ripped into Chuck it would seem that Meg was going to block or avoid rather than try to soak any damage.
she turns on the white light beam on the heavy flaslight I recon that if ghouls are blind then they wont pick up on white light so when you are in range you can let rip an we can convert to UV real quick in case any are left standing.. I've got UV flashpaks too if they get within arm's reach.
If we really need it I can summon up a big nature spirit however I dont want to take the chance on that unless it is really needed.

((I'll go with the idea that Shade wasn't warned and yes he rudely looks at Megs weapon foci))
Shade stares at the camera from it's off center, he didn't know it was there. He was not happy and threw on a mask. "Next time your going to bring a camera I demand to know ahead of time." He snapped at Meg and kept snapping. "Some of us pay a lot of money to stay hidden." He smacked his forehead.
He took a deep breath and composed himself. "I don't believe ghouls are completely blind. I've seen them respond light before. It makes sense that they could tell between light and darkness otherwise they wouldn't know where there was sunlight to avoid. Then again it could have been coincidence."

Flying over Megs shoulder is a 1'5" Sprite with dark blue wings, bright blue hair, a black long coat and leather gloves. Mist has 2 spells locked into there focuses. 1) INCREASE BODY F5 2) COMBAT SENSE F3 Mist left his deck back at Megs place but brought his electronics kit and is wearing it as a backpack. This is no time for intros I'll get to that after the battle. I do hate these under ground adventures you never know what could jump out at you. I know ghouls are here but I don't want to think of what else is here.
(OOC Rolling for starting money since I can't in the forum that Mist was posted in. [dice=6][dice=6][dice=6])[rand=950039009086019667425692641215951052004008916499906393450785417]

Fade keeps close to meg. He's seen the other around the commute but doesn't really know them. After Shade mentions the thing about the camera Fade gives a start and pulls down the mask that Meg supplied. All you see is big eyes and a wide grin.
Fade dress well in what looks like secure clothing. There is a bulge at the back of his coat that is most likely a pistol. If anyone asks or looks very closely it will be determined that he has a Walther PB-120, a nice high end light pistol.
If any one needs me to help carry the load I can help out. Fade says as he seems to sniff the air a great deal more then anyone else, maybe he's got a cold.

Shade was in his normal armor load out. (personal armor plus long coat) His terminal on his back (like normal) and his rollout medkit slung over his back hanging lower to let his terminal breath.
His sword in hand he hands his UV lamp to Fade. "Thanks man, I appreciate it. Damn thing's heavy." Now he only wields his sword and is currently perceiving. (astral sight) He looks at Mist's and Fade's auras (since he can't help it) then back to Meg. "If you wanna do this right, we need to actually catch one. Then you can run all the tests you want and the best way to do that is to ambush some. Dab some blood around and scream like your leg's broken for a few moments and lay back and wait, I could have some watchers look for some and tease them into following them into our trap."

Henri is in his urban camoflage suit with the balaclava covering his face and armed with his silenced Predator & spells. After activating his reflex focus, he reverts to providing spell defence for himself, Blackout and Bishop. He considers torching the ghoul's corpse to kill off any virus that might remain, but decides against it not wanting to tire himself in case he has to throw magic around later. "Here we go again with takin' it alive. Almost like she wants to open a fragging day care for everything we come up against." Henri thinks as he scans the tunnel up ahead.

*spinning, he points a pistol up at the sprite, lowering it only after he sees that its now holding onto the UV lamp.* "You know, someone should really warn me before little flying things join the group" he says with a frown. turning back, and looking down the tunnel once more..

The object is to discover any evidence of vampirism - any ghouls we can eradicate on the way are a bonus.. You're right SHade we can leave attempting to analyse these things for a later date - I will concentrate on fine-tuning the detect..
The detect is like coloured shadow images a little like seeing their astral signature but the further away the less subastantial the image is.. It is a lot easier to try to concentrate on the images like using a telescope because there are other images around as well... It is not an astral signature - I wouldnt know if it was a spell or a bargheast or a watcher using this detect.
We shall all try to be as quiet as possible - and we can keep the lamps on a lower white light setting so they are not alerted quickly.. do you think that will be useful... each mage maintains overwatch in preference over the point guys .. what about using astral sight - projecting could be dangerous.. anything else?
which way? there is evidence of duality both ways.. more of them to the left.. four it looks like with two to the right. We could take out one lot then come back for the others - keep our exit route clear.. But if theres a lot of them around we may just meet another group
strikes me that the City would know about ghouls as they would have to send teams down here for repairs. that's probably why they put out a bounty on them.
Fade an Mist with me close in - be nice to have someone watching the rear so that will be up to you two -
Bishop Shade Hunter an Henri - looks like you will need to be forward from us but not by much... we stick together in sight. You guys are in the place to make the decisions we shall support you with the two UV beamers and magics - let's go.
Whichever way you wish to travel you will quickly come across a set of ghouls. Shade has noted that they have a limited light sensitivity and exceptional hearing - smell too - they seem reasonably easy to drop with a short burst - anyone with a roomsweeper may want to rethink using it as the shotgun burst may blow bits all over the place. how are you going to approach them?
Are you going to take special precautions or sustained spells which may impair your accuracy? Bishop and Hunter - what are you using as your main armament?
