Freddy puts out a few calls to his corp contacts - getting the replies he had suspected -
Growder's empire is going through the courts to assert Ma Strait as recipient of the family personal shares and controlling interest in both it, and Strait inc. She looks like being part of a flurry of interest in the shares base - and where money is concerned, comes that corporate oil, greed. To protect herself, she now has an independant security contract which is keeping all but high level requirements at arms length from her, at different locations for her personal safety.
So much for contacting her... and the mansion will have been cleared... Board members can be reselected... So its your last option...keep quiet, and heads down.
I'll call up a few people to see if theres anything currently going down that has an opening for a couple of 'security consultants' - may take a while. You need to be anywhere soon?
Pops - are you in employment now - or currently between projects? if not - do you need to be? and do you fancy us working together..?
Freddy fones around to find out the word on the street regarding Seattle's black economy - to find out who is hirin, for what type of job, and how much it pays.
And checks up with Bill his electronics pal if he has been able to find one yet..(a big magbuster)

"Me? Working? Hahaha..Nah, I"m not doing the 9-5 thing no more...No, I'm looking for someone in particular..but it's a ahem..'side-project', so I got a pretty free schedule. Guess we can always do some work together..."
Pops took a slip of his coffee. His 'side-project' was much more personal that Freddy could ever thought, but it was haunting shadows. Ben was a good kid, big mouth, but a good head on his shoulders. He'll make it in the shadows fine he'd reckon, might as well meet halfway...but always checking his trails too, you never know...
"Yup....Guess we can always do some work together..do you only do 'security consultant' work, or are your horizons more widely open? I know a few people that are always looking for 'hired hands', if you catch my drift....Of course, if it's Old Lady Strait is what you're after, I did some work like that in the past..it's been a while, but it's like riding a bicycle.."

'Security consultants' sounds better than 'couple of geezers lookin for a job - no questions asked' -
I can do a lot of things that others cant do, it means that quite often I fall short of what they think I should be able to do, like frontal combat assault. I prefer getting in without being noticed - light recon - makes sense to me - play to my strengths, know and avoid my weaknesses.
Ma Strait sounds like she has some heavy hitters around her now, unless she's got an interest in me - and I hope not, then we wont get too close to her..
So yes, I'm lookng for a job opening, paid for in clean certified cred, and where beggars cant be choosers most any work will do - but I dont want wetwork..

"Not fancy yourself as a hitman huh?..Well don't worry about it, I don't like it either. Slow age for guys like us, but I did manage to get some cred on the side with collecting protection and debts. Not hard job, not very dangerous, but you never know..'spcially since you're not working for your friendly neighborhood bank, visting white-collars in their protected enclaves...You can tag along if you want, doing it alone is a bore, and the pay's finally decent."
He took a slip of coffee, looking at 2 Lone Star Beat cops coming in the Coffee Palace. He approached from Freddy, whispering "Of course if you do well, I'll put in a good word for you, my..employers... are always looking for new talents."

I already run my own small business - It is quite easy to get hold of me - you too probably, being a registered citizen, so the 9 - 5 is already covered, I can keep the wolf from the door..
It is the more specialist jobs that pay well, that I'm after.. More dangerous too. Anyone looking for talent should be paying for it along with the danger money. Problem is with those jobs - theyre few and far between -and only a handful of contacts will know whats going down, often you're in by invite only!
So i'm calling up a few peeps in the know to track down those hard to come by jobs.. asking around to find out if anyone is hiring for decent money.. If your employers have any specialist work lined up, then I could be interested 'scuse me while I make a couple of calls Pops..
Freddy stands up and fones Sammy the fixer who got him the Growder job - to see if anything else was going down, and then Huggy Bear his club-cruising nogoodnik mate who knew what there was to know about most up and coming events...

Pops.. it's been good to see you, I'll keep an ear open for any up-and-coming jobs that have a reasonable payoff, an if your current employers have any similar openings for another 'specialist' at specialist rates, then I'd be interested.. be nice to know who I'd be working for though Its going to take a while for people to get back to me, so I'm going to use the rest of today catching up - I'll give you a fone if anything crops up..
See Ya

Freddy heads off from the coffee shop, from the waiter's slip and the regular clients - it seemed that Pops had worked for the star - not useful from many shadowrunner's POV, but it would mean that Pops probably had contacts in the force.
Fine by Freddy - you dont know who is pulling the strings anyway when theres a shady job needing to be done, and whether it is some corp exec who doesnt care about anything except the results, does it matter if it is the star or Renraku or Aztechnology? They can all fit you up or bring down wetworkers if the risk is great enough, a corp is a corp.. whats in the name !
Speaking of Aztechnology it would be a good step forward to arrange a meet with Gottal from the 'Pyramid'. Freddy liked to keep in contact with his 'freinds' in higher places, otherwise they tended to just drift away.
Most citz mistrusted the Aztechers with their tales of blood magics and sacrifices, thinking of them all as cannibals and going to temple sacrifices on their days off.. But beneath thay caring exterior that the corporation did little to alter, beat the cold heart of the typical corp - 'whats in it for me?' 'Payback' should be the answer.
Freddy knew Gottal through the Snake-Oil shop, a trader has to get his goods from somewhere and everywhere, and Aztechnology is THE supplier of magical kit. Gottal had been working Seattle for about fifteen years - about the same time as Freddy started up. They had met when Gottal was walknig the street, drumming up trade as a sales exec. His Mexican looks had changed over the years - he found that a few nips and tucks gave him the Amerind look, a much better passport into people's hearts - if that was the right expression to use...
Freddy had arranged to lunch at the Shop - Gottal could talk shop and they could arrange further meets later on in more neutural ground.
Chowder and rolls, over the recent catalogue for powders an elixiers, they needed to restock. It gave them both an opportunity to exchange tall tales, wants and future openings. After a little light business, Freddy asked wether there were any openings for employment that Gottal had heard about on his travels dealing with the magic community and those who wanted to hire a specialist.. Gottal knew Freddy was a Snake follower an information gleaner and a full magically active practitioner, and was not averse to private hire.. I'm looking to buy a couple of eco kilns, and to set ourselves up to refine pure metals for Meg's jewelry. The cost is prohibitive, so I'm looking for work that pays well, just like everyone else.

Whats going on in town the Freddy? Whats the news..? Heard anything about this Ripper spirit? Seems like its dropped out of circulation. You know my employers would be interested in that....
'Bet they would' thought Freddy 'Tie a ripper to a coven of Aztech priests an youve goy a slaughtering machine..' It would be worth a lot to Aztech - but there were some things to keep shut down forever..
I'll keep my ears out if anything crops up.. know this is old news, but I heard that the warehouse crash a couple of weeks ago - well there was some heavy magical hitters involved, Vampire hunters as well, military style - could be there's your ripper... I had a look at the trid footage, two mil-spec vtols, I counted the rotors in the wreckage.. and inside the warehouse you can just make out a circle... I recon
It was enough to be interesting, some truth .. the site would reveal only shadows of the carnage and shadows of the magic used.. vampyre to add in the mix to misdirect, and old enough to be not worth too much investigating. Blame the ripper murders on vampyre and more of the filth could get hunted down. Snippets and hearsay.

Very interesting, I had known about the crash from the trids- but that there was a lot of magical activity on the site.. that is different and could go to explain some of the fluctuations our astral department had been attemptng to investigate. It is a pity your connections have left it quite late to let you know.. were you able to srcy the site? I see that your shop front is shot up - have you been the victim of gangland violence?
And Meg's hand is bandaged - violence comes in threes they say.. You should jump at the next job you are offered - you cannot be scratched!
On that merry note Freddy, I shall take my leave. I shall call you soon. And as I usually say, if you do want to quit the day job, Aztechnology are willing to hire on both you and Meg full time contracts !
Gottal cheerily waved and left.
'You know I dont like or trust him' Meg spoke up coming back into the shopfront, she'd been hiding from Gottal 'Why did you let that warehouse info go? It could lead the Aztechs to primo research on the ripper and then they would let rip on millions, I'm ashamed of you.'
'He's fishing for information, yes specifically on the ripper for those reasons, so if he's fishing here then he will already have seen the vids and the circle - IDeed the coptors, and want confirmation, I'm not giving him anything he doesnt already suspect.. They can scry the place now and get very little apart from shadows of death and spirit magic - theyve probably already been there earlier, if not the day after the attack - as he said they watch the flux - movements in the ether so will have been trying to track down the spirit once it splashed down in the Seattle pool. Meg, I wouldnt sell out our principles to them or any other corp - you know that. Gottal is a contact in the corporates - whatever they are after, so is every other awakened unit in the area. The ripper is still hot in their eyes, so a little added half truth might lead them off the track enough to leave us alone.
Maybe thats one reason that the Beaver is being up-armoured, a lot of magical heat would have been pressured onto Dom H the owner by various organisations interested in getting a lead on the ripper phenomonon..

Freddy returns in a bad mood from another potential job.. already filled.. some people he recognised and had worked with before.. damn! The Aztechnology contract whispered in the back of his mind, quickly dismissed, but there none the less.
It wasnt the money, it was the opportunity to apply his skills - that hard-nose practice that rewarded the runner with a little more insight.
Could be a reason to go back to cat-burgularing, alone. But it was too dangerous - no backup unknown security, but idt did have the upside of being very profitable. Nah.. it wasnt the money any more. Though he could do with earning a hundred Gs to set up a couple of kilns and all the gear that was needed..

What the hell!
Meg's left a spirit message - off to do some biz - sorry you wer'nt here - seeyou early a.m
What the... Wrong place right time, and right place wrong time - not my bloody day!
Freddy is well cheesed. Well, it certainly looks as if there are the runs available, but getting snapped up real quick. Soddit, he would stay up and wait and worry - It is worth having a think about a new spell that he wanted, a good chunk of experimentation would be needed, but if it worked out it would make burgulary a lot easier...

Freddy! its Gottal - listen, you got time to talk business? You mentioned you wanted to pick up some heavy duty industrial equipment, like kilns and such, Well one of my buyers runs a glass-making business and is only just ticking over making hand-crafted bowls and stuff - too many cheap immitations he says.. he needs a couple of months to cover the slack.. I could do you and him a favour by getting you two together, and he will keep the rent down to 100 a day .. two grand a month! Everyone wins! Talk it over with Meg, give me a call...
something to run past Meg - It is part of the project they have talked about long into the night, it would take up at least a month but they would also need a bit of trusted muscle.
Gold does silly things to people...

He toted it up 100cr a day rent for the glassworks - thats 3000 a month - theyd need about two months - Gottal was repaying him for the warehouse lead, the roumour mill was already churning with this - Freddy had laid down enough of a trail that Aztechnology would get no joy in assensing the warehouse now, and he had kept his contact in the know. Everyone played games, Gottal would have known about the glassworks for a while, and had checked out the warehouse tale before he came back to Freddy with the offer.
It would take a week to prepare the lodge in the place, transfer it all from the Snake-Oil Shop, another week to put in some security while Meg sorted out the kilns and the rest of the kit. Gottal would recognise the place as being able to be used as an alchemical facility - and would no doubt be interested in the products that he and Meg would be looking to make.
They would be able to come to some arrangement over exchanging Radicals and selling some through Gottal so he could make a cut.. Radical of gold, Freddy had been saving his haul of nuggets for a while.. his expedition should be reaching the pickup soon for the important trade-off, and they would have enough to use..
At current costs, gold nuggett was worth around 30cr an ounce - gold was cheap! all the traders used the old imperial for royal metals, sort of kept things proper. Around 35ish ounces to the kilo making a kilo of nuggett 1,000 give or take a few creds. Freddy's deal through his contact should bring in about 15,000cr , fifteen kilos of gold.
Meg wanted to aim high - she wanted to make the Oil, that Atlantis metal. She'd read everything on it, and reconed it would take her a month to concoct. As with any dream, they costed, and the cost to make the stuff needed pure gold, not just the stuff from a furnace, refined then radicalised gold. Gottal had a pricelist ranging from 40 to 80 thousand a hit for the stuff.
They reconed that if they could do it themselves, they could use any extra units they made, to trade for other less expensive alchemically purified metals. Each purification would double the price - the refining should take a week but the teasing out of the purity into a radical would be a whole month. They had two units and they could end up with eight, at 40,000 a hit! Freddy daydreamed about the spare quater of a mill they could create - then the Oil - one unit of the gold and a few other baser metals - all purified, could create three or four ounces of the stuff, the stuff of ledgends. Another month though - was a lot of time, but Meg would have her Doctorate and another 100 ooo for each ounce! A cool half-mill overall. They could stuff back-street jobs and concentrate on what they wanted to do.
They could buy the shop, rent the glassworks for three months every year and make magic solid - constructing a magical spirit-biting blade would cost 500ooo - the time, that was the thing.. and also if Meg wanted to sweat away in a kiln for a month or two churning out items for others to buy. She had been getting more shady jobs than him recently, she took to them easily he worried, too easily?
