Just wondering what other people think about all of the masses of open character info up and around?
I know that really people should be able to treat OOC and IC knowledge as separate, and while unfortunately some people never quite manage that properly, I think having the info accessible is probably a good thing... But sometimes I'm not sure.
I'm just interested to see what everyone else thinks ^_^

Personally, I think all of the secret keeping in SR in general is bullshit. I mean, if it's some huge secret about a character's past that you want to spring on everybody as a plot hook, that's one thing, but if it's stuff like "I went and bought a new gun today, but I don't want anyone to know about it," that's just rediculous.
In your game on OpenRPG, for instance, I thought some of the story aspect of the game was lost because of all the wheeling and dealing in the background. I also would have been annoyed beyond no end if I were in you shoes and had Barry whispering to me about every little thing 'cos his character was the "Secretive type."
I think that most mature players can keep OOC and IC information separate, so I like to try to play with most of that stuff out in the open. The really BIG secrets, by all means keep out of plain sight, because more often than not they'll make for a great scene later on. But as for the piddly crap that a lot of people try to keep private, I think it's just misspent effort.

id have to agree... 2 reasons why I like it this way.... 1) id have to make a seperate hidden catagory(s), per member, on the forum THEN.. restrict it so that only a GM and the sole character can view it.... this is possible.. I could do that... but... I can tell you that it would lag up this board more than it is already.. AND.. it just takes way to damn long... 2) I like to be able to see what other people have for stats and what not cause sometimes I can get real good ideas off of another character... and.. really if your not mature enough to keep OOC seperate from IC.. then you really shouldnt be playing.. you should be put on lythium... every RPG forum ive been to have characters that are in game with stats visable.. it keeps an honest man honest... wouldnt want those super abilities to just appear out of nowhere

I'm easily mature enough to keep things OOC if I know them.. that's never been a problem for me.. .. but I just really like surprises in game.. so I generally prefer not to know It's just not the same when you knew all along.. "Wow.. you're really a dragon?! .. .. .. ..ok" Fluffy

ok.. yea.. I agree with that...sometimes when people describ themselves.. its not really indepth... ive know people to tell me that his guy wears a buisness suit and works for Ares.. and he wears glasses... well thats all good and dandy.. but what kinda "guy" is he strong, smart, bla bla bla... it saves on wasted spam trying to get someone to describe themselves in detail...

Personally, I think the why behind something is important. If I'm buying a pistol I don't wish the rest of my party to know about, I'm usually also buying a quick-draw concealable holster as well. The reason is in case I need to shoot members of my party, in which case I like having the gun they don't know about around just so I have that added advantage.
I can see a point for having things you do that you don't necessarily want the rest of the group to know about. But, at the same time, I think that doing every little thing like that should only happen if you are planning on betraying the group, something you should let the GM know about.

once again tho. it goes off ogf a maturity thing... if your in the UGR you cant kill another player neways... unless you have the characters permission... and when your playing in a campaign where you have to kill a member of your party.. then it will be up to the GM to decide whats known and whats not.. my fear in saying "dont bother posting certain info" is when we get that one time that a human pulls out an Vigorous Assault Cannon and claims they had it the whole time (they just didnt wanna put it on their character sheet cause they wanted it to be a secret)

when i look at sombody elses char sheet i look at info that you would just be able to visually see in real life ie: hair, eyes, cloths, race, gender etc. ya know those kinds of things but as far as the rest of the sheet i try not to look at it so i dont play my char as if he knows these things about the other chars in my group which most of the time he wont, so that i can play a more realistic char on my part

It also depends on GM style. I know that with the UGR area, I'm likely to be between runs.
Hmm. How about a compromise? People can mark items on their sheet as being secret when it comes to equipment, and others are assumed to not be known unless revealed. Like, I may choose to keep the machine pistol secret at first.

in overall total honesty... strait from the horses mouth.. I really dont care what you have or dont have... but before a campaign gets started.. the player MUST pm the gamemaster and tell all.. that way there wont be an issue in the middle of the campaign when you pull out a gun from the secret compartment built into your leg... you can make whatever you want.. if you want to create a dragon for a character.. go for it.. but youll never get into a game.. the only thing ill buckle down hard on is people playing with there stats, skills and karma... when a character is submitted.. I copy all of the info onto a board thats not visible to anyone but me, and that way if any fights should come about from it.. it can be handled quickly ( ive played WAY too many RGPs to know that one of the highest causes of RPG fights are when characters can magically do something they couldnt do before ) keep to yourself whatever you want.. but make sure a gamemaster knows everything before a game starts....

lol, i know that feeling, that's why i keep the character sheets for my Pen/Paper game, not that I don't trust the players, but no reason to give them the opportunity. Better than memorizing all their stats.

Saturday evening rant - secret squrrels! - I think that its always a comfortable (sneaky) feeling that you have got something over the other players, that ace in the hole , a holdout special that can flabbergast players.
However the overall play is really what counts - not how much you can tweak your characters. PLAY is where the unexpected should occur - in the play, a double ( or even rarer fun a triple) cross or well timed Karma burn should impress far more than a hidden trick.
The soldier is expected to have a few blades, needlers, or a well positioned one-off heavy gatlingthat they dont use daily. A sneak has probably read ninja comics and has a bulge in his pouch turning out to be a big F.O. electronic grenade
We ran a variety of games and a rationale for coming together always proved an awkward point, as we diddnt wish to be close or responsibe for or to anyone else. Most of this harkens back to the filums (movies, films) where the hero is a competent loner. Disparate individuals do get called together - often individual differences do clash but it is more of a professional rivalry - If they are part of an entrenched group/gang then there must be a good rational to seperate them from their home turf and therefore see the reasons for unity.
Yes they will still have a blade, skill or contact to call upon in hard times but... most of their professional moves will be known as part of their Modus Operandii - otherwise they wouldnt have been hired! See blazing saddles hiring on baddies!
different ways to play .. Look at new heroquest (I have been a big runequest fanfor 20 or more years) general skills from which you can pull special effects as long as it fits with the character or do you itemise down to the rounds left and constrict play? Bookkeeping sucks but you do need some sort of records.
I ran Bushido eores ago - but awarded immediate ticks for good play, good ideas etc it really did get people into the swing of the scenario, knowing that they would/could get a tick or two for being restrained - or losing some for going against the code - players really liked it! They even got ticks back for being humble! But I digress...
With SR you can use skills in a general fashion - if you really want, why not push your luck (burn Karma) and create an effect ? Easy enough to do, you already use B/R electronics to jimmy a door, why not use a different combination plus a sprinkling of pixie dust- erm, Karma and provide a prescision martial art strike to open the lock. After all it is pushing your luck, feeding on desperation, looking for a way to....
I want a hidden needler/bomb/ cyber implant Using Input and restraint, mixed with pixie dust why not have it! (but PAY for it when it is required - you been savin for a rainy day bub? - fresh out? well why not fry something WELL expensive instead.... you ARE desperate aint you?) But I want one now ! And noone can know about it! - if its that secret keep it where the sun dont shine coz it is not going to be THAT useful!
