If I'm in the other run, is it alright for me to have a character in the Universal Game as well?
Also, when starting a character, do I have to pay for a focus along with the spell points or just the spell points.

to your first question... absolutely.. in fact I would like to see EVERYONES characters here... Shadowrun is more of a mission name than a life name... when your not in a run, your a person who has places to go, things to see, ppl to meet.. thats what essentially the universal room is for... if you dont like where someone is? start your own thread and see who comes to see you
as for your second..... dunno... someone more qualified can help ya there

Lol thanks. Me and my buds have been playing it like that, if you pay for it with magic points, ya got the focus. If its okay I'll just do it like that for now unless someone has a problem with it, in that case I'll scratch the character.

I'm not totally up on all the magic rules, but I believe you have to pay for it, then have to pay karma to bind it or something . . . I'll have to read up on it, but just go by the rules in the book, whatever they are.

Meh. The Karma stuff is if you get it in game, but you can start off with it if you pay for it in spell points, i'm just asking if I have to buy itin nuyen too.

*there are limitations to max spell points bought with nuyen* (you'll have to look up... dont know off top of my head... 35 max I think...) also... starting out, you can only have the number of spells equal to your magic rating and power cannot exceed your magic rating either... so if your magic is a 5, you can have 5 spells with power of five max...

I'd like to make a distinction with what Xtreme said about characters from the Campaign. I don't mind if people use their characters in both places, but the Universal Gameroom has no bearing whatsoever on the In-Game room. If you want to roleplay something out in the campaign room, by all means, do so. Create a thread and go at it, but the Universal Gameroom, as it applies to my campaign, is for liesurely roleplay only--i.e., it's just for having fun and shooting the shit. What happens in the UGR will not transfer over to the Campaign.

uhmmmm............. so... if I meet someone in the universal room.... id have to pretend I dont know em if they play in an adventure with me? ;D
im guessing your talking more on the basis of earning Karma? I set the shops up so that people could purchase things as they need em... and soon im going to introduce a gambling room to help players get Nuyen... also at this time, ive hired 2 new people for my company ( The Eager Beaver ) you are correct, that the UGR is for shooting the shit and what not.. but its the start off point for all characters... like I said before... in any RPG video-game.. the UGR is the basis of the game... the IGR's are the adventures ( or quests if you will ) that is part of the game...
so... in the game.. you can get the ruby of power (this is an example item) but to go on the minotaur quest (example) you can only use the morning star of flagelance and the shield of light (once again.. examples)... this is alot like I had built this site to be like... sure you can have a Vigorous Assault Cannon... but it doesnt mean you can use it in a shadowrun... I will take time this weekend to read all the rules ive made and see if they need to be rewritten... perhaps that will help end all confusion once and for all....

Well . . . why can't all the roleplaying go in the game room? If I am going to game master this thing, I don't want people earning nuyen from unsupervised sources or buying things without consulting me, or doing any of that stuff that's happening in the in-game room. I mean, if you guys want to roleplay and have fun outside of the campaign, I don't mind that, but campaign includes more than just shooting stuff and earning karma. It's supposed to have a story to it--not necessarily a very structured story, but all of that character interaction and roleplay is integral to the campaign. In my estimation, Shadowrun isn't supposed to be like a MMORPG or anything like that--which, from your post, seems like most people are treating it as. And if that's what you want, I really don't see why I have to be the GM for it. If you're just going to throw missions out there and let whoever take them, why couldn't different people run missions? Maybe I'm too much of a control freak, but it seems like you're taking a lot of the responsibility and ownership of the campaign and throwing it out there for anyone to tool around with. If you just want to roleplay and all of that, I don't see why people in the campaign couldn't just start their own threads in the Campaign room. The way it was set up, I thought the UGR was going to be for anyone to post any type of character and just roleplay with each other. If you want to see how I intended to run the game, follow this link. It's a d20 modern game, but it follows more of a story than just a mission by mission basis. www.goand.com/home/index.php?/home/forum.php&FORUM_ID=7928&frames=1&session=30abd03e2dae5ad59e0acf1ecf357d71

Okay. I have two questions.
1. How much damage, and what range would an 8 foot long thick heavy chain do? 2. I want to use some of my money to build my own gang. Can I just devote as much as I want to it, and take it up with the DM of the specific game I'm going to play in?

8 ft chain would have a reach of 1 (if the DM allows it as a weapon, and of course would be impact damage) I would assume it would get the standard metallic damage code (Str+2 M stun) Of course I would expect a GM to give you a hard time if you didn't have room to swing it, or if an ally gets too close to you while you're swinging it... hey, drek happens...
As far as a gang goes, you can buy contacts at the time of creating your character without needing karma. If you can afford the nuyen to buy them, I don't see why you couldn't have your gang. Don't assume your gang has any reputation, if I was GMing, you would have to earn your rep. and I only have 4 more words for you Mr. ork gang leader...
Universal Brotherhood (and) Humanis Policlub...
have a nice day...

yep.. im gonna agree with the last part... basically you can have anything you want.. if you want to make a God, make a God BUT it doesnt mean that he will get into campaigns or be rollplayed with... you can see that Mr. Johnsons playing character is the owner of The Eager Beaver as well as overly connected ( see his contacts list ) he also has close to 1 Million Nuyen himself... but hes not a fighting char... in fact the guy cant even fire a gun... he can use martial arts.. but hes got nothing really useful for cyber.. and no real good equiptment.. hes nothing more than a Sub - Johnson.. so I made a very rich/connected guy but cant really do too much with him... Styles on the other hand is not super strong.. not really weak and has what id consider an average SR character...
the point is.. make WHATEVER you want.. but if people dont work well with him.. he may not do to well...

while an 8-foot chain would be a cool weapon, I doubt it would do more than L or M subdual damage. There's the inherent "cool factor" of the weapon, but damn son. My mama always told me, don't bring a knife to a gun fight. The same applies for chains, IMHO.
So in short--yeah, you could use it. But when it's just as easy to put a couple rounds in someone's dome, why would you want to?
