Does anyone want to stick their oar in here, and propose a few ideas adjustments bung in some dice, challenges etc? Necociation seems appropiate, but so does some corporate interference.
But does a corp want the end goods or do they want to kill the goose ? local interference, Seattle sepoulca, B and A corps/mafia wanting stuff they have never been able to get their hands on, other colleges muscling in to influence the allocation of places... as of yet it is a gamble - it could well fall flat - the colleges decide to not recognise her.. If they do not, and it turns out she is good then they lose out.
corps buy 'futures' in stocks - thats what this is.
all said and done theres not a huge amount of yen sloshing around here - yet.
Someone else want to do any sums ? If Meg is as good as she claims, she can make F2 blades and F2 power focii quite easily, and for reduced karma bonding - street value x2 or x3 makes her a lot of profit - people will want to buy. if she gets any time... will she be forced to make time?
How will the word get out that she is making gear to various groups - either wanting to buy or steal?
Practicalities and a bit of realism would go down well. Anyone who has thoughts or ideas - please run them along, maybe get a group to break in and set up a trid likk to steal secrets.. How would she react to being manouvered into different awkward situations? Kidnap the kids?

Meg does think about the security and how much she could make on her own - but one of the big areas to look at is the crappy end of things - Talismongers can make fetishes and powders - but it wont make a living for them as the sale cost is sooo cheap about 2000/month = street lifestyle making gear in squats or the bedsit sink.
But someone makes them - that is where aprentices come in - an indentured worker - supplying time for training. They learn how to make the stuff and practice doing it, with the alchemist using the stuff for enchanting. The enchanting needs radicals - again the crappy stuff tin and herbals sell for bugger all, but only an alchemist can make them, as they are needed in the manufacture of foci as well as oricalchorum which is a neccessary for weapons. The board would know this - which is why their courses are currently three year ones - time to try out - time to make lots of radical iron and radical silver that students would later use for focii.
Her itinery was fine, traditional, but very fast, and did call for students to have a rudimentary working knowledge. Their sandwich year would be more of a specialist application than a standard course route, promising much but also requiring a great deal of work.
If she swung the contract she would take Freddies advice and install autoturretts - he seemed quite excited about them. Boys and toys she supposed. Again it depended on the boards descision on security. She could call her freind Mary at Knight Errant and ask her about tailored security measures.
Meg sent her a call immediatly. then had a quick zed before gently landing.

Yes - it is all within my business plan - a five year rolling contract and alchemichal support personnel to work under my contract, or terms to be discussed. I want to give back, and to earn the prestiege I believe I am worth. I want to run with my ideas, as long as they best fit with your needs.
This is a proposal meeting where the contract between ourselves can be adjusted neh? Or do you require an immediate presentation. Oh you do.
Well in that case, I will offer you my business plan, a request for a college attachee under contract to me, I am a private limited liability supplier. All monies to be paid in quarterly stages in advance.. It is to be understood that I am a seperate yet affiliated company providing the training and experience that will give at least six students the wherewithall to study towards making a traditionally recognised journeyman piece within the year and a day of their indenture to me. They will undertake a self responsibility waiver as there will be potentially dangerous circumstances they may become exposed to.
I want to build up a reputation for being the best, continuing to be affiliated to your collegiate board. Gentlemen, Ladies, thank you for your time.
The board had only one sticking point, the college representative and how to organise that, including the payment or reduction in said payments
Board, as you requested a specific working presentation, my complete fee will be three million yen for ten students, with a reduction in cost of 200,000 for each one less. The affiliated college representative must be able to fulfill all of the duties if I were to become incapable of persuing them, but also work as directed as a full time alchemical practitioner. this would lessen my fees by half a million yen. We begin at the traditional first moon cycle at the summer solstice an auspicious time, excelent for gathering herbals, giving us nearly eight weeks. Are you in agreement?
The board had attempted to shunt her ideas to accomodate their own wants, but by standing firm and applying their own strictures to them - they were not negociating, merely tuning the finer points. Meg had gone with paying for a college alchemist as it fulfilled virtually all of the strictures the college wanted to apply, including wanting to know how it all fit into place.. and it fit with her requirement with needing some political clout behind her so AA companies would not be tempted to muscle in on her business. win win all round. She did wonder who would be allocated and how many students.

2 open dice for the number of students they are willing to committ.. [dice=6] [dice=6]
poo - roll it in 'A barren waste land' eek! 12 students + Meg = a full coven !
mightily auspicious. Meg can instruct all of these - the college are obviously testing her out. After an initial set of interviews to ensure that each does have a rudimentary alchemy knowledge of 3 or more, Meg can begin to think about her trip back, and which college alchemist will accompany her. Soon to be joined by the 12, and 2.9 mill yen.
It is a good deal, each student will be gaining the services of a full time alchemist, a mill at least!
her fone goes.
Gottall - leaving a message asking her if her endeavours have been successfull. He thinks she is just coming to the end of her alchemical studies... doesnt he?
She has demonstrated to the board that she can create oricalchurum and a weapon focus. She has the commitment and the ideas to carry this through. they have replied with an auspicious number of students and the protection of the college system. who could find fault with this arrangement?
Her mind flicks to the next couple of moon-months - mostly out of doors talismongering collecting herbals and minerals. She had already cut a deal with Ballastor to share mineral rights at the mines once a year.
She needed a fine herbal collection area too. The North West was a little too rugged, but the magical activity around the volcanoes was legendary.. if she could swing some kind of trip visa with the Tear Tangerines, the Tir have the run of the best magically active lands - but are also paranoid.
Meg understood that the Sinsearach were better to contact as they were small and wanted to develop - as long as it was eco-freindly. Close cooperation with their wardens could prove to be beneficial - but an absolute loss in gathering the herbals as herbals wer worth next to nothing - unless they could track down and be allowed to collect useful plants to grow in Seattle. Some knd of bio-diversity exchange...

then she needs to contact the Aztechnology representative. Gottall. No major problem, as he was probably ignorant of what she was up to - and even if he did know that she was setting up a school, what business was it of his? She could buy the lease and premesis now, and be fully independant.
Yes, her signal came from the London colleges, noone would interrupt their processes unless there were huge benefits. She is either running like a headless chicken or is phenomonally gifted. If she maintains the lease over the next two month in order to complete her endeavours then she is a poor practitioner, unable to plan. If she trys to buy it out it indicates that she is fully competent, then she is exactly what you are looking for Master.

Yes Sir, from the airport to the college, a meeting with the Masters for two hours, yes it has to be business. We should receive an internal from that. Plus weve dug out a little more, looks like the husband Fred is now linked to Hasseltorn and was certainly linked to the loss of our special forces in the Ripper fiasco there. Yes minister, blades like your bodyguards carry, specialist blades yes. Yes Minister, the kind of thing that MI13 are always wanting.
On the flight back - she could have done it all by tridconf but the college liked traditional, so did Meg. twelve and her.. a coven, she was impressed.. it would still be good to train up some young prospective talents as well - take them along to help out and learn on the job, if she could find a couple.
Premesis - she would need to extend the lease or buy the place - she had three million to play with..
transport, she could ask Lucille for a three month round trip, up into the mines and also a bio collection. The Cascades were poor for herbals, great fot scratchy creatures, but the flowers came from further south.. maybe a Salish deal....
the coven would spend two months gathering and refining in the field, then return to make radicals for another few. the onsite alchemy was her department now -with the help of the college representative. fashioning the power focus or weapon would take a while, leaving three months where the students would make oricalchorum from the metals gleaned from the mines
a biologist/horticulturalist guide for Salish - another minerologist for Ballastors mines - some protection and a team to look after the coven for two months. A safari ! She needed the whole shebang.. contact the places she wanted to get to and organise local guides or somewhere to put up a squad - local was the key.
What about the students? her apprentices - they would be under her rules - follow them or lose their place.
She'd better get digging..
Put a call through to Lucille - to get a reply of 20,000 per month 50 for three, for the summer an extra ten...
The deal with Ballastor was fine - thirty pounds of ores each - but pay for the gold that should cover minerals and metals..
A trip out to the Salish in the West needed organising - go through their Agreculture and Fisheries rep as well as their Rangers department. Meg wanted an exchange of some sort, maybe collect specemins as well as the herbals in exchange for a planting exercise? All of it had to be cleared and above board so they knew that there would be a party of mage students on a field trip.
Each place would need some specialists - a couple of instructors for a few days- another 5 thou for each location plus living expenses at around 1500 a day for nearly 90 days - 150,000 Actually though it sounded a lot, it wasnt bad for three months tuition for a dozen.
The protection wold be tricky - for that length of time, a regular team would be appropiate, Knight Errant squaddies - 10,000 a month got you a high lifestyle, and KE carried good credentials for being neutural. Alternatively local Rangers would be better - knowing the area and its dangers. Less of them with time to go 'babysitting' but there should be a way of recompensing them, a pair of Stabilisation Units sprang to mind..
She would call Ballastor later to see if he could organise the local help for the mining area..
once they had collected the raw materials they would need to refine them - shouldnt take long with half a dozen kits. more overheads.
Speaking of which, tax. she had thought about tax- and decided that if she was paid a British salary of 500,000 it left a payment of 2.5 mill to be taxed under Seattle Corporate law of 25% 1/3 of that could be spread over the field trip expenses and untaxed and another 1/3 lost on educational relief, so tax shouldnt become a heavy issue - unless the Seattle city hall decided that it did need to investigate. So she needed an accountant too.
Once back at the Lodge they would begin making radicals starting with industrially harvested herbals to make powders and fetishes then their own collected minerals and metals and a few lectures and local trips - she did want to visit Spanish Toledo steel - as old if not as prestigeous as the Japanese masters, but had produced better blades. Give their works a call to arrange a weeks long visit.. Genoa for its glasswork too, or invite a craftsman here, maybe premanent.
Bump up security - for the students - she kept telling herself it had to be a must - Freddy's autoturrets might just see the light of day.
by this time the students should have learned talismongering basics a smattering of knowledges and higher alchemy - the second period was all about getting into pure alchemy
Three months of producing oil one of theory and the last three to manufacture a focus and a replacement for the mentor - well, two as one would be made as payment for their journeyman peice. They would not just be walking away with 200,000 worth of magic for nothing.
One or two may even think about taking a second year and using her facilities to produce something bigger or better.

One area in the contract is that the students will be working to produce a journeyman peice - a blade F2 will require around 200,000Y in resources alone, so there is a requirement to repay the mentor in kind. Like for like sounds fair, however all that does is replace what has been lost, an equilibrium, a repayment is something more than just payment, it is re-paying. The ancient guilds could indenture students for years, ownng their contracts for work, and releasing them only when their obligations had been repaid. One of the reasons why the traditional alchemy courses took three years. Built into the contract too is if the student decides to spend a lot of fruitless time on an adventurous piece and fails, then further time can be awarded in three month periods. In effect Meg will hold the final legal rights to say whether the student has passed their apprenticeship or not. This will depend on the student 's application and commitment as well as achievement.
Similar to traditional restrictive practices, Meg is a keen-eyed teacher, hard on pushing herself and those in her charge, and shall not be swayed by slack excuses.
There are a few final checks - the board has the right to select the students as is only right and proper, but Meg has the right to deselect any applicants upon specific grounds
Meg and the Alchemist shall be teaching the students at a rate of 1 skillpoint per month for fully improvable skills, and an additional 1 point of knowledge skill.
This could pan out to a massive 13 skillpoints being spent on a single topic - but do not be alarmed, - students will be versed in the rudiments of talismongering - 3 kn skillpts botany minerolagy and metallurgy at 1 and the theory of alchemy for 7 which shall give them the the solid grounding they will need.. as the latter part of the course will involve no time for study, just pure graft.
With each advancement they will gain an awareness of power, so a few karma will be available. This is the traditional method for alchemists to gain karma - or personal power - through study and advancement in their craft, as they tend not to go out and about wrestling black ice.
Meg awaits the staff and students

She has to provide a secure working environment for the industrial shed.. the passive security is already set up, now that she has some cash to play with she can ensure that when they are working there, they will be safe. As she will be operating under a company, the yard will become company territory and subject to company law, so though she couldt carry an autorifle, the company could employ one, legit.
she doesnt fancy shelling out another half mill on a professional security expert on a full time contract, but investing that sort of cash could go down a treat if they were attacked - for hostage, disruption or theft. A system will take a while to install - but theres another eight weeks and then two month of field trips
To do this she would need to buy the place. Go through Gottall to purchace the lease would be easy, but as she's got to get an accountant to look after the books, cant one of them chase down the legal owners..
She knows that Freddy has legal connections -so will ask him if he can steer her in the right direction. As it is, the laywer Freddy knows for insurance scam reasons is readily available to suggest a legal outfit - not tied to corp politics, or liable to seel you out... Justin Time the insurance salesman is happy to do business, as part of the Cheetham, Doowey and Howe partnership, he can take over Meg's corporate accounts.
Now one of the little known things about Seattle city is that there is very little legit money coming in from taxation in general as most people try to avoid it - youve either got the money to do so, or you work in the big black economy.. so the city survives on VAT - import duty and sales duty - but a lot of this is a long term plan to stabilise the population, keep people working, let tollroads get built go out of business then add the industrial capital to the city network.. it is really looking at a two generation term to make sure that in sixty years, the city is still there, a small but thriving independant state, where employing people is good, isolatin yourself is bad.
Company policy is to play the game - pay your feeble taxes, but make the city thrive, Seattle employees , Seattle housing, food clothes entertainment
Justin's advice is for Meg to be paid and then she employs 'Snake Oil Studios' a seperate company to run the training business. Once he understands how it could operate his smarmy smile returns, mentally calculating how easy it will be to offset a dozen live-in trainees against revenue gained from the British who are paying for the training.. external companies using Seattle as a training site... huge tax breaks against living expenses entertainment materials you name it!... all for a measily quaterly review cost of...
Meg shushes him at this point - 'I want you to work on this account from the Studio only, I will maintain control of books and you can hold a backup, but everything must be completed onsite 1500 a day - 2000 a day - fine, for 24hours.. Justin gets outmanouvered and has to agree - probably less than he could get - certainly less than he expected and he was no slouch squeezing money out of clients.
two weeks later Justin comes back with the news that there is a city lease as he suspected assigned to Aztechnoogy, The glassblower who had made way for Meg had been turfed out! It looked like Gottall was trying to gain some real leverage over her business.. paranoia is healthy in small doses - keep Gottall close, play the game... problem is Meg isnt used to the rules.... She needed a deal with Gottall or she may have to go head to head with Aztech.. no thanks.
Bugger, more problems.

she receives the 850000 cred immediatly paid to the company she sets out buying the rest of the things she needs.. Sorting out the purchace of the shop with Gottall was much easier than she thought, laywers on tap.
In effect Meg, Aztechnology is interested in you and what you can make, we can turn out powders and potions and most standard focii, least half in use are made by us, but it is blades that are the difficult part, not even the blades, there are plenty of skilled craftsmen who can turn out obsidian or steels, it is the catalyst , the essential Atlantis Metal that is wanted.
Before you say you will need every unit you make, there is always room for barter - We believe that it should cost around 100,000 each unit in time and materials, and would like to enter into negociation - barter for future units. Why not think of buying the lease for the first unit?
We want to keep the trade in the Metal to zero, make focii or weapons we dont mind, thats your job.. we would like to encourage you to trade any surplus through us, in return for access to Aztechnologie's enormous database and stocks of hard-to-come by exotic materials. We want to keep a barter cartel in place .. magic for magic.
We wont buy it from you but we will trade it, but we will need a commitment of three units a year in exchange for best price goods, services, equipment training.
Youre a specialist, we want you on board. Where magic is concerned, we have access to nearly everything you can think of, and more.
Take lots of time to think about it, we'll always be close by !
Three units was the surplus a good practitioner could make in three months, what was the downside of not being inside the cartel,,? well general supplies for one, distinct trouble for two , and trading the finished products for a third..
'Would this be a permanant fixture? what if I decided on a three year holiday?
Meg knew she had ultimate control over where and how she supplied the shop, the college had not put any restrictions on her either
We have found that after a while, most makers come to accept the trade-off as a neccessary evil, a mutual back scratching tradeoff - it is not the one offs that we want to keep down, it is when someone goes into production, twenty units a year for a few years really mounts up and if that hits the ground in one lump then it makes big corporate waves, and blood on the streets.
But if youre not making, or maybe just - as they used to say, 'for personal consumption' then thats not industrial activity, so no problem.
As for permanance, well we generally look at a five year rolling agreement, the people outside of this tend to be either corp sponsored makers - totally independant of Aztechnology - or paranoid reclusives. After a while, many Makers become big enough to require industrial supplies, through one or other major corp, it becomes too much of a headache to self source.
Keep everyone in line - well in your line anyway, and have the clout to come down on you like a ton of bricks in an independant place like Seattle.... If she moved to Britain, the Lord Protector would take a big interest instead.
Gottall you got yourself a deal, where do I sign?
Gottal could have smiled, he'd brought her on side, not that she had much option if she was to begin making more than one or two items a year.. Meg should have potential, the meeting she had in the London college tweaked at his mind, was she looking to become a professor, if so would she leave for Britain? what purpose could she have remaining in Seattle apart from research?
A lot of practitioners tried to default on the contract, and go fully independant, thats why there were a lot of Aztechnology magic items around, and iron bracelets back in the jungle pits. Once they had been reeducated, they worked reasonably.
And he did want the orichalcum...

Yes minister, an alchemist. SHe will be the head of department for external faculty, yes in the free city of Seattle. We do have security personnel there, and yes she has met them.. well through thr Ripper fiasco remember the South Shields coverup? Yes she was one of those who helped trace them down, erm yes a patriot, well ex-patriot.
Will she be able to influence those in and around Seattle, well minister she is not versed in erm foreign diplomacy, but would eventually have access to influential individuals... yes minister

(OOC - a few changes here to alchemy.. use Orichalcum at a rate of 1 : 1 to weapon force. Reason being you could make most weapons quickly - except the big ones - then it is luck.. and reasonably cheap too if the Atlantis metal is used one dose per weapon. Then sell em for a fortune. So to up the production cost, Orichalcum units required = Force of weapon
-otherwise Meg has just made one and a half million in two months.

Whats the weakest part in any security system Meg? The infiltrators having a ground plan. No, the employees. You gain information about the organisation through the individuals. Who has access to most parts of an industrial complex.. Erm the technicians.. No, they need clearance, it is the new stuff that comes in through the door, janitors pizza part-time and full-time staff who have been bribed coerced or magicked.
Depends on what you want to keep under wraps.. industrial secrets? - other alchemists can do the same so you dont need that produce? yes - but it is all geared up to a certain time, so you can highten security for then and stash the produce, quite tight production schedules. Interruption? yes so you need to isolate your production from everything else. staff? yes you need to keep them safe
All in all the security has to be physical. Provide a safe working environment from smash and grabbers. Tight on who can get in and out - doesnt matter too much on who knows what there is to avoid as long as it is difficult for them to get through !
There will always be leaks from staff or students - even a snatch and a mindscan -
Youve got the passive security set up - now for some active security. Auto turrets with an AK97 firing gel, motion detectors targetting would stop me unless I really had to get in. minicomp, AK97 chip security chip armoured bin heavy mount, semi mobile so you can move them during the day...
OOOh I've always wanted to have some on my side.. theyre the pointdefence systems you have to creep up to to disarm, and in this ouside make they will be brilliant.
If the opposition want to up the stakes and assault the place you need an internal safe system - a holdout room so you can hide until help arrives. Easy to install not so easy to access.
Knight Errant is... How much! thats half a mill a year! wow!
AK97 700 smartgun 600 mount 600 gas 2 450 Ultrasnd sight 1300 Gunchip 5 7500 security chip 5 7500 computer 5000 about 25,000 each plus the armoured bin. you need at least four, plus setting up, a cool 100,000 to have these beauts recognise staff or authorised personnel and shoot anyone else.. keep the rats down too. theyre independent so cant be hacked - plenty of storage in the comp - its not a deck so it is cheap It is the clever chips that make th cost.
A security company installing these should throw in a holdout room.
Youll need living arrangements for these guys - youve got six offices to convert easily, buy in a few decks for library use - some weekends off in town at a hotel
And some staff.
Arrange the tour stops and the visiting specialists too - though I dont know about contacting people in the Salish area - theyre not so phobic about non NAN or non Meta like most of the other nations - and theyre realists too, supplying power to Seattle so they shouldnt be too set against a bio collection trip - do the eco bit and try a plant and collect ? - surely you know a few delegates who may want to help out..
Meg did have a lot of contacts - it wouldnt take long to follow up either.
After a few days she had a discussion over the fone link - any party of awakened would be welcomed (rolled a 10) the lodge would reqire Salish forestry officials who would double up as security in order to correctly educate the party, and the suggestion of a plant and gather is very well received.
Meg had the field trips sorted.

Good afternoon Miss Meg, My name's Benny, the college sent me. I'm here as your resident backup Benny beamed - displaying a mouthful of misplaced teeth, had'nt he heard of simple cosmetic dentistry? and what was with the knitted blue hat ?
While they waited for his trunk (trunk.?) Meg noticed his retro boxer band above the retro retro crinoline slacks - his shirt was tucked into them, surely not... it must be a new Brit look.. dorker.. He explained his interest in the theory and mechanics of alchemy - the guy was phenomanally well-read, Meg thought she knew a lot, but Benny was streets ahead of her.. after he explained that his hobby of attempting to categorise the theories would eventually lead to a numerogical breakthrough, Meg found herself not wondering why he had been sent across to help her. Still, he was a professor in alchemy, so had to know his stuff, not just a pretty face, well ...that was true. The taxi from the flyport took them to the industrial zone, entering the shop, he diddnt bat an eyelid regarding the trouble she had gone to in order to get things straight, but did comment on the lack of research materials.. She had wanted to ensure the pooters she got in would be fully compatable for linking with the London research sites, Benny had a list of them , mentally churning out the information for her. After a look around, they could go shopping and get some furniture in for him, as well as an outside place to stay..the Crossroads Motel was close by... and a bite to eat.
He was, erm, different from what she expected
