Hello all. Name's Gatts. Yeah. Anyway, I'm new to this Play by Post thing and am reading up on 3rd edition rules for Shadowrun in preparation to create my own character.
Last month, I received the 4rd edition book from a friend who thought it was a graphic novel at a convention...knowing I like RPGs I guess I was the first person to come to mind...thing is...I've never played a PnP game in my life so this will be a first in that sense too, though obviously missing in the "in person" factor =\ I found here and to be honest...I'm actually kinda anxious. The rules seem a little intimidating but I'm sure I'll get the hang of that, and role playing with time
See you chummers in the shadows

there are many benefits to pbp... you dont have to make 20 phone calls to get people to your house, then buy snacks and beer (or let them each know that its a BYOB) THEN get them all to your house at around the same time only to have one call and say that hes late cause he got pulled over.... then you finally get everyone to your place and spend the next 2 to 3 hours hanging out and talkin about your characters and cool rules that you just found loop-holes to... then you finally are ready to sit down and get ready when one person announces that their char doesnt have any weapons but youve held off this long so screw it lets play.. 20 min into the adventure and theres a fight, well now its an issue cause one guy doesnt have his weapons and now another guy realizes he JUST left his LUCKY dice at home and cant use any other ones... so then there is a one hour conflict because hes whining about how other dice arent like his, and the other guy is asking if he can have an assault cannon mounted to his leg.. then everyone says no but one person says "well.. you know you could if..." and that starts another one hour debate.. THEN some smartass forgets to let everyone know that he had beans and broccoli for supper and launches one that puts everyone in a coma for 3 weeks... with pbp.. with this site.. you spend a few min aday performing your actions.. it gives you time to read whats goin on.. go to work and think about what your char could do.. GMs here have different styles and different rules so please make sure you check out any house rules when you join a campaign.. but above all
HAPPY FRAGGINS and welcome to the site

Welcome to the Boards, Gatts!
A few minutes? Yeah, right. Of course, you forget to mention that the DOWNSIDE to PbP is that you're dealing with people from timezones all over the place, and sometimes you have to wait a day or two (or three) before you get a reply to your actions.
Of course one UPSIDE is that if one GM ends the run, there's usually another starting up fairly quickly. Unlike the RL games I've played in where the Shadowmaster bows out after a short while. This game actually lasted six sessions instead of two. Thankfully, one of the players is as hot to play as I am, and volunteered to take over GM. Now we get to debate about a few salient points, but we've got a week to hammer it out.
As for Johnson's example, I've never seen it get THAT bad, but I've seen things get distracted. And of course, he forgot the players that show up late or not at all, and don't bother mentioning this to the GM....

Yeah, if you're into liesurely gameplay, this is the site for you. Me, I'm married, working, and trying to pay the bills on one paycheck while my wife searches for a job. I don't really have the time or the money to spend on group RPG gatherings. But PBP? It takes, at most, about 15 minutes of my day, and I still get to indulge in my SR addiction. All things considered, it's a good trade-off if you don't mind waiting.
But anyway, welcome to the site. If you're looking for a game, you might try the 4th edition site (theshadowrun2.proboards101), but I don't know if anything is starting up soon.
