Evening all,
Just wanted to stop in and say hi and see what was happening. 8-)
For those that care, A little background - I have been playing RPG's for over 20 years now (primarily D&D) but just found Shadowrun in the last 6 months.
I have the chance to play about half a dozen sessions live before work schedules changed and the game fell apart.
I have been reading the new novels by Stephen Kenson, but really want to play.
So here I am.
I have only played 4th Ed but have access to other resources if needed.
Any suggestions on where to go from here?
Thanks
JDragon

hmm, my personal opinion, stay away from 4th. i dont like it primarily because of what i have seen of the damage codes, it cuts down the fighting and makes it faster, yet more generic, *i.e a 22 pistold does sligthly less damage than a .50 de. which in real life wont happen. the latter gun can blow a limb off) there is however a 4th ed game going on, and a 4th ed UGR thread going on.
for those who can help, well, ic an help a little, i know less than i seem to portray. Bradocc, Expogue, Johnson, and the other mods can help you Pelch Gobwit will trya nd rob you blind wsithout you knowing it. The Retros are also here to help a bit. There is an open game going on room 9 for 3rd ed, played by us. right now it is very chaotic, but new enteries are allowed in at the start of new missions.
oh yeah, one more thign
Welcome!

Welcome to the game, Jdragon, from the Retro's. There are many good games going on right now. There are both third and fourth edition games, chose your comfort zone.
There are several excellent IRC or IRQ games. Finally there is a variety of styles and moderators to choose from in the Play-by-Post (PBP) games. Each moderator runs things differently and some are infinitely more complex than others not better just geared to more informed players.
(Johnson it might not be a bad idea to have the rooms rated and show the complexity rating of each room on the page. I just thought of that since this question keeps popping up. I think Johnson should give each room a complexity rating and post it next to each moderator's name. Maybe a 1-10 thing with one being toughest and ten being simplest.)
The room nine game does appear to be the most chaotic from the Retro's point of view, it has numerous twists and turns and seems to focus on character development as a primary goal. It is NOT the most complex game, just the most free wheeling one that we have seen. It IS experimental.
I strongly urge you to look at each game and moderator closely to see what suits your personality. If you want practice before you get into a game where it counts, I strongly suggest you try the UGR (Universal Game Room) first, you can even start your own game there if you wish.
The first thing though is for you to contact a CHARACTER Specialist and get a character designed and made while you're looking over the rooms. My advice is that you take a look inside each game room and read their storylines and manner of posting for each. Then decide which ones you like the best. When you find one you like then contact the moderator for info on availability. They are there to help you get started and can direct your attention to specialists if you have deeper questions.
Krondax, I read when Pelch posted his rules, (I can't see them now), but seem to remember he stated room 9 was an OPEN game and that people could enter or leave whenever they wished. That means they can write themselves in and out of the thread at any time. At least that is the way I understood it. Can you check that for me? I think the other rooms work differently, from what I see, but it doesn't hurt to contact the individual moderators.

Well Eon, I guess I beat Krondax out here. For a class act like you, I will be honored to post the room 9 rules here. The one you are referring to is rule 2 and you are absolutely correct. What a mind!
Rule 1: This game is for FUN! If it ain't fun for you then it's a chore and you don't fragging belong here. If you want to learn, enjoy some give and take, ain't afraid to step up, then you're in the right place. Make your own dice rolls. You know if you were successful. If you're not successful be honest enough to take the bad breaks and write the outcome that way! Another words; you come to a point you need to roll, make the roll, abide by the results and continue the storyline with the outcome. If you get too many fragging success's we are going to know you're cheating and then your going to be kicked. Everyone on the Boards will be notified, because with cheating comes punishment and consequences. Don't betray my trust and you're standing. I'll be watching. The dice roller should be in the room if you want to use it.
Rule 2: Players can enter or leave this game at will! You are not locked in. Just, at the very least, let people know your status. All OOC:s will be done right IN the game so if you see a problem, have a complaint, ask a question, we can all participate and see the answers. While I am the moderator and do have final say, I don't intend to trample on anyone's right to say what they want. We may not always agree, but at least you Can say it.
Rule 3: Insults among characters, humor, jokes, put downs, insults are all welcome between characters. Insults to actual players? Can be cool if both sides are agreeable and not likely to take it personal. If it gets personal and you don't like it, politely ask the other person to stop. If they don't I get involved and someone may get booted. It's pretty draconian I know, but the game is not fun if the flames are taken personal.
Rule 4: You're all encouraged to make moves, as often or not often as you feel capable. Real life is out there chums and we can't always be here. Accidents happen suddenly and machines break. I'm not going to remove anyone unless you haven't said a word in a long time, we're talking months here, omae! If you know you got a problem OOC: so all know. Now your encouraged to help build each other up, put words in other characters mouths so to speak if it is in their characters previous style of play and it doesn't hurt them. So if your out encourage others to keep your character in play for you.
Rule 5: The GOAL of this room, besides having some fun? Learn from each other! That especially includes me! New ideas, new ways of doing things. WE ARE A TEAM! We work to make the team better, we cover each others player weaknesses. TRY not to let the TEAM down. WE are ALL counting on you to contribute and leave a mark on this world. You can't do that if you don't get involved on some level.
Final Comment but not a rule: Johnson is still over seeing what we do. It's his board and he spends the Nuyen to keep it going. He has final say, no arguments with him. You argue with me, but his rulings are final and the argument STOPS there. He expects us to do things that reflect well on his work. As a result we always respect that goal and TRY to make his job easier no matter what we contribute. See you in the game. « Last Edit: Mar 10, 2006, 8:33am by Pelch Gobwit »

Thanks for the info.
At this point since its what I know, I'm going to be looking for a 4th ed game.
Thanks for the info, I'll start looking at some of the threads and see what I think.
Where would I find a character specailist to talk to? Is it a specific thread or someone I need PM?
Thanks

Hey BONE BRAINS! The Dude asked a question. How about answering it! He wants to know HOW to contact a character specialist that KNOWS fourth EDITION RULES for character making. That also IMPLIES that he is looking for 4th Edition Rooms. This is the fourth EDITION moderators chance to get a fresh player in. Step UP you guys and do your JOB! Sometimes a fragging generic Hello, don't cut it. You got to get involved, read and ANSWER the questions to the best of your ability or at least give him a starting point.
Now you all know why I instituted a Bitch-Slap policy in MY corporation. After all this guy might have a nice looking sister or a desparate housewife for me to take advantage of. So get off the dope stick and find out this really important info for me.
Just to get you started though, you will find the Character specialist's names listed in the Submit a Character room. I'm not sure which one is the specialist for fourth edition though.

Well, I have the 4th edition book as well as the latest Errata.
I have successfuly created one character for my short lived live game, a cybered human with a big gun. Has worked well so far, but I think the GM was going easy on us cause most of us were new.
His policy was to shoot them first, alot; before they got a chance to shoot him, as he was not very good at taking a hit.
I also have a troll rigger about 3/4 finshed, was just having issues with his equipment. Drones and what software I need to make it all work correctly.
I'll swing over to the character forum and see if I can find anything useful.
BTW - any info on 4th ed games looking for players or starting soon would be greatly appreciated.
THanks

I can help with 3rd and 4th Mages, Norms, and Samurai; Riggers and Deckerz you might want to talk to the other 2 as I don't generally run either. Of course The Great Krass could log on as something other than a Guest and help you too, since he is the motivator and go getter that we all love to shoot at.

Krass, every new members gets a PM with all the important link and some info too. I admit it's short and all, but the submit character page is pretty straight forward, so expect if he can't click his way around it, at least he can directly contact me in PM (since he already got a PM from me and all) So if you think we're all making a half-assed job, please just sing-in, take the role. I'm here to help people, just because I help them in PM instead of in this thread doesn't mean I don't help them. So don't give me shit saying I don't do nothing around here. At least I don't go around bragging that I might have singed-in as random person just to "spy" around and look at how things are run. So instead of just trowing criticism around, get involved, or shut the hell up.

Yeah, um, I have to agree with Braddoc. Krass, that response was over the top--you should really think about what you say. I know your name is "Krass" and all that, but honestly dude. You're just annoying.

Bradoc? Think a minute. It's Krass we are talking about here. Krass the perpetually stupid! The Krass I know thinks Pavarotti is something you order at the Olive Garden. Krass looks like another great mud crop this year. Krass doesn't go up he goes down on anything! He's a complete moron and I do mean complete. His date probably had a disease that night and he didn't get any!
He's also a US citizen and probably related to people in the current US administration.
I can also recognize his trash talk when I hear it. My advice? Ignore the butt head and don't let him rattle your chain. He hasn't got a brain to think with anyway.
