Welcome to here Scawire, good to see another Canadian in the melee.
We mostly play 3rd ed and there's also a 4th ed game going. dunno if we'll ever have a second ed game running though..but we never know.
If you need something, don't be afraid to ask.

Sorry I took a bit just looking around. I could get the main 3rd edition but it may be a week before I get it.
It's been some time since I last played everyone took of the BC on me so I'm trying to play online but never done it before. 2nd edition is what we used back in my day before FASA died.
Directions on how to place a charater online and what all is needed in the character would be great

Bah no problem, you didn't know..
Game rooms are play by post, live game rooms are games played on mIRC or in the boards' chat room.
As for the background, that's the character's history on the bottom of the char sheet.

Welcome aboard, scawire! Personally, if you don't have the books don't fret too much. Fourth Ed isn't real easy to find, but there is Limewire to fall back on. As long as you don't mind PDF.

Yeah, there are some notable differences from 2nd and 3rd, but nowhere near the gap between 3rd and 4th. I've yet to play 4th edition, mostly 'cos people have tons of 3e books, and hate to see them go to waste (like me, for instance). But if you want another alternative to forum play, you can look to OpenRPG. It's a chat program kinda like mIRC, except it's geared solely toward roleplaying games with dice rollers, character sheets, initiative tools, and all that stuff built in. Check it out at [ftp]www.openrpg.com[/ftp]. Also, you can check to see if anyone is starting up a shadowrun game by looking at their forums. Most of the time that doesn't happen, but people recruit on different servers from time to time. And as a side note, welcome to the site

Well, you can always post a bit in the UGR, as to make some sort of intro to your cahr...
If a game open, generally you simply have to PM your char to the Gm and that's it.

Anotherfellow Canadian, excellent. Welcome to the Shadowrun Proboards, Scawire. Your Main host is Mr. Johnson. You can get help from several sources and there are character making specialists if you need help there. Might I suggest you browse each game room and get a feel for the style of each GM and player group in them? Each room has it's own particular style based on the GM and you want one as close to your style and temperment as possible. It also helps you get familiar with the storylines. Good Luck.

Better than being Jack Off I suppose. Eon's right. Lot's of good GM's on here, each with their own style and sense of humor. The UGR Room let's you freeform, practice and introduce chracters. The Play by Post rooms are varied and the IRC let's you do realtime. The Retro's help keep us straight, go check out their section under humor. Here's to getting involved. {Hold's up glass of Lager.}
