The trunk silently opens, as if hearing Ashi's request. Tortuga
grabs something off the seat off the floorboard of the Westwind, and
looking at Tank, "Take over..."
Tank walks over to Tortuga to see what he has in mind. Just as he
rounds the front of the limo, two explosions go off in series from
the location where the projectiles were seen flying into. The first
sends a shower of glass to the pavement floor from five stories
above, as several windows shatter from the percussion of the blast.
The second mimics the results from the first with the addition of
small fragments of concrete debris and dust cascading down from the
windowsill.
The smell of fuel and spent gunpowder permeates the night air, with
no signs of any cars approaching for the time being. Only the low
purr of the idling Westwind can be heard as the sounds of a gunfight
and shattering glass comes to an abrupt halt, leaving an eerie
silence in its wake.
Flinching from the explosion, Tortuga finishes his thought,
returning his gaze upon Tank, "As I was saying, take over for me
here, and get them out of here before these gringos decide to
actually do something dangerous. I'll get your limo back to the
garage." With that he moves to the back of the Westwind and grabs
some tools and some random bits of tubing and adhesives out of the
trunk.
Ashi abruptly stops running as he reaches the rear of the Westwind
and grabs his side that is bleeding.
"Is it over?" Wandering Star asks calmly from her seat. "Are any of
them alive?"
Chain ducks his head to look into the Westwind, "I think it's done."
He then flashes his lop-sided grin and adds, "Unless any are very
unlucky, they're all dead."
"Well, as my buddy Clint said in Unforgiven 'Hell of a thing,
killin' a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna
have..." Bang pauses as he thinks a moment, then continues, "I don't
know about all of them, but the essences of the two in the car has
faded."
"Yeah, I think two of them got away. Where is Hellion?" Tortuga
moves over to the limo, plugs a piece of equipment into his head
jack and the limo's hood pops up.
"Damn!" Star swears uncharacteristically. "We had hoped one still
breathed long enough to probe his mind and find out who sent them.
Hellion? Let us see..." The glow in Star's eyes diminishes and her
eyes return to their normal pale gray. Suddenly Hellion appears
standing over the downed gunman in the street, his suite jacket
soaked in his own blood. Additionally the light blue glow
surrounding Bang fades out.
Suddenly Hellion appears standing over the downed gunman in the
road. "Damn, there goes another suit," mutters Hellion as he walks
over to the Westwind. He slaps a fresh clip into his pistol before
holstering it.
"I'll run around back and see if I catch one of them coming out."
Ashi takes off running down 5th avenue.
Tortuga looks at the rest of the group, "So, five people can go in
my car, six if you include the trunk. We shouldn't all be here when
Johnny gets here, so who has a reason for being in a Limo? I could
be the driver. White folks like the Mexican drivers, and I have to
stay here to fix it, anyway."
Chain looks over to Tortuga while he puts away his mono-whip, "I'll
stay with you and cover your back while you get that thing running."
Chain then reloads his Viper and quickly moves over to stand by the
Limo.
"Personally, I'd rather not be here when the police arrive," Bang
adds nervously.
Wandering Star looks at Bang beside her and says to him, [loud
enough for the others to hear] "We understand why Tortuga needs to
repair the limo, however, is it truly necessary for all of us to
remain here? Would it not be more prudent for most of us to return
to headquarters and contact Monk? If we have been ambushed, perhaps
he has as well. Not to mention Hellion is bleeding all over the
street and it will be very difficult to heal his injuries. We will
need much more time and a more secure location to tend his wounds."
In a poor imitation of a Texas accent, Bang says, "You just keep
thinkin' Butch. That's what you're good at." then smiles at the lady
who just healed him. "I sure don't want to hang around." Then loud
enough for those outside the car to hear him from the backseat. "Can
some one drive us out of here?"
Tank nods to Tortuga and Chain, plugs into his remote control deck
and stands up. The Westwind engines revs as he approaches, "Get in."
Tank stops at the driver side door, waiting for anyone else who is
coming to pile in.
With quick direction from Tank, Tortuga finds that the source of the
fuel leak is actually under the limo near the fuel tank. As Tortuga
quickly go to work on the fuel line, Chain takes up a defensive
posture near the limo, while Hellion stands defiantly by the idling
Westwind watching the city streets. Bang and Star take comfort in
the sports car, patiently waiting to be taken home.
Like the sun reflecting off fools' gold in the desert sand, millions
of tiny glass shards covering the street flicker from the street
lamps lining the city block.
