Hey All,
Ive been elected by my local gaming community to GM a Shadowrun Game. It'llbe my first go at SR and while Ive done GMing before I'm wondering what sorta advice you guys can offer!
Like what are some good hooks you guys have used, story archs, character origins etc...

have a look at the thread 'tips' - 'train and shop' has a lot of discussion you might use at a later date- but I suggest play to the things you are comfortable with. A quick 'barroom brawl' with a local gang trying to muscle in on your local club to get everyone used to the rules. keep it lowtec.
read some of the storythreads here - decide on a city style you can all think about - ghost in the shell anime or megacity or gotham ?
make sure everyone in the group runs a single short scene as well so they can all see how tough it can be. that will get everyone used to the rules. tabletop dice are great - but explaination trumps dice and leads to good thinking and good story

I first started by reading or watching other campaigns.. you get an idea here and there and then you can mash it all into one.. keep in mind that nothing will ever go as you plan it to.. speaking from experience (boy have we got some good stories about that here on the board) and please come back and let us know how its going.. if you have a question feel free to ask..

Im one day away from my go at Shadowrun4... kinda nervous!!!
I've decided to try to make the first adventure set in a riot - which fits into the greater story arch - which should give my players a chance to experience several combat conditions - poor visibility, extreme temperatures, non-lethal combat, melee and some magic. Im going to avoid Astral for now and while I want to get them into some low lvl cybercombat Im having trouble seeing how. Perhaps hacking into a security spot that has gone hay-wire with some nutty rigger using to drones to shoot people up, opening a few security doors and info searching.
Ive decided to use the sample characters in the SR4 book so the first day doesnt get bogged down in character creation.
What I am worried about is the pace of combat. Ive play tested a few combat situations on my own and it seems kinda slow. Any advice for speeding it up?
One other question is on miniatures. Do you advise using them and how best to work movement and stuff on a tiled map per say?

a blow by blow combat takes months in real time - get the players to state their intentions for the round - avoid dicerolls if you dont need them - story beats dice!
you have an idea in mind of what the place looks like but so dothe players - and they dont always mesh! what seems obvious to you may not be to them
describe stuff in terms of what they can do with it.. 'a real tough security door will need a good skill to open it' 'the alleyway is long and strewn with oplenty of boxes and bins you could easily use these for cover' the crallway is tight one at a time please- next person to post tell me where they want to be front back or middle'
provide them with a few options - and allow them to take others!
you can allow them to roll but waiting on players who are off for the weekend can be frustrating
I tend to write up the storyline then the characters are introduced to it - so there is something real already happening and will run its course whether the players are successful or not!
enjoy!

The game I ran actually was a table-top one with some local gamers. It turned out really well despite my making a few mistakes - but who cares about rules if you have a good story to tell!!! I did run into some problems - for instance I got a wee bit jammed up on Matrix stuff. Mostly I think this is because the prerolled hacker from the SR4 rule book seemed really weak for some of the stuff the mission required. By contrast the melee characters therein seemed a bit too powerful as some roll close to 18 dice for various actions which seemed a bit extreme for beginners. Thnx for the advice though Cheers Lass
