APPEARANCE
Lance is a about normal size for a dwarf, maybe a little taller and stockier than usual. He isn't very impressive-looking at all, his short beard and hair are a little on the unkempt side and his nose is somewhat bulbous. He dresses in a long coat (that is, long for a dwarf) and boots, with casual hard-wearing clothing underneath. His coat has numerous pockets, both inside and outside, and he'll often carry a briefcase with him.
PERSONALITY
Lance isn't very refined, but that doesn't mean he can't string a sentence together. He's quiet, patient and meticulous when faced with a problem. He drinks when off-duty, possibly a bit too much, but he never touches the stuff when working. His specialties take a clear mind, and he's not old and complacent enough to start taking stupid risks.
Like most dwarves, Lance tends to violently murder anyone who cracks too many short jokes. He doesn't make crude physical threats though, he tends to run more along the lines of "You ever wondered what happens if someone smuggles quarter of a kilo of plastique and a micro-detonator into your food?"
HISTORY
2031, the same year the virus was finished off by the survivors of Echo Mirage, was also the year the Kirch family spawned a young boy they named Lance. They made the mistake of taking the year as an omen, and within a few years Lance was old enough to handle a computer. His parents were dismayed when he was more interested in taking it apart and looking at all the pretty wires than actually using it, but that was the true omen of things to come.
The Kirch family had a pretty usual life for the next few years, they weren't badly-off what with being white-collar humans. As metahuman relationships began to dwindle, not much changed. His parents weren't serious racists, as long as the metahumans stayed away from them and their boy, who was taking his early computer-breaking days to greater lengths and leaving trails of wiring behind him on his way. It all changed for them when Lance stopped growing when he was 12, or at least stopped growing upwards. He continued growing sideways, however, and to their horror the two humans Kirch found that they had managed to spawn a dwarf.
Unsuprisingly there was a distance between Lance and his parents from there on, some could say it's what led to Lance falling into a "bad crowd" of gangs vertically challenged like himself. Lance's response would be "Go fuck your mother.", though, if someone said it to him. Biking became a hobby of his, though he still spent much of his home time pulling apart what electrical appliances he could find and doing his best to put them back together. With such an expensive hobby it wasn't long before Lance found himself venturing into theft to support it, and he became quite adept at sneaking into places, using his childhood hobby to bypass security systems, and make off with armloads of expensive home appliances and tools.
He still ran with the gangs, between his exploits in increasingly-professional burglary, and got involved in street violence while he was still in his teens. Times changed though, gangs don't often last for long, and Lance was soon displaced from his old group. He hooked up with a bunch of bikers instead, dwarven bikers, riding Harleys. His ability to crack security systems lent him to great use amongst the up-and-coming go-gang and he was able to procure a bike of his own before long.
So Lance rode with the boys and girls of the Road Hogs (hey, no-one said they were an imaginative lot), though he certainly wasn't the most dangerous rasher of the gang he could hold his own and his position as the brains of the bunch assured his continued membership. Again Lance outlasted his peers, they didn't last more than a few years, and eventually were caught out by the Star and shot to pieces. Lance and one other managed to sneak away, mostly thanks to Lance's history as a thief and his consequent ability in going undetected. The other survivor ended up finding his way into another go-gang, but Lance was disillusioned with the ganger lifestyle and sought a less inevitable destruction.
Somehow, this ambition led him to Shadowrunning. He, mostly by accident, ended up doing some work with a combat decker by the name of Nitro under the pay of the local mob. The two got on pretty well, Lance's skill with purely offline security systems meshing nicely with Nitro so there was little in the way of security that one of them couldn't bypass. Of course, they never tried to run up against the giants like Ares, and the one time they did a run heavy enough to face Black ICE Lance ended up pulling the plug on Nitro to save her brains from getting fried before they cut their losses and chose discretion over valor. Though neither of them were street samurai Nitro was a tough, mean orc happy to slug it out in a firefight and brawl while Lance was happier slinking about with a rifle, providing cover fire. It worked out well, for a few years, and they made quite a bit of nuyen which Lance immediately sunk into the best electronic gear he could get his hands on, while Nitro boosted her cyberdeck to the max. Sometimes they'd work for the mob, sometimes helping out Lance's old gang buddies, sometimes just running on the occasional tip-off. Occasionally they'd work with others too, hitmen from the mob or some grizzled old mercenaries, but Blackout and Nitro were the only repeat act in the performance.
As a sideline, when the 'running wasn't sufficient or Lance just had some free time, he worked a straight job. The money was nothing compared to dirty street work, but it kept him fed and gave him more experience in his specialty, working in an electronics store. It also introduced him to some of the finer arts of electronic warfare, and he'd spend nights in the workshop playing with radio frequencies and cracking encrypted communication just for kicks. The small array of contacts they'd built up, working the streets over the years, got Lance into the hands of a street doc. Paying top nuyen, Lance got some of the electronic gear essential his job wired straight into his skull.
Eventually though, the act got old and stale and they started getting lazy. They decided to split up and go their own ways, looking for something new to keep their edge sharp. Lance and Nitro still hang out for a few drinks from time to time, and they'll even hit each other up for a favour, but they don't work together like they used to. Lance went on to work solo for a while, but it didn't have the security of someone to back him up if it all went to drek, so he started seeking out a new time. He had heard of an operation going on, bodyguarding mages. Well how much trouble can a bunch of pussy spell-tossers get into?
Sounds like easy money, and regular at that.
